This miniature collection of imagery highlights aspects of my life and experiences as a Lesbian artist. From replicas of objects I own like the rainbow mug, Lesbian Connection magazine, and the Lesbian flag to the Sapphic symbolism of lavender, I curate a snapshot of my identity.
The concept of diversity and inclusion means the freedom to live openly and authentically, while also celebrating the unique journeys and perspectives of a variety of people.
Ode to Gilbert Baker
6 x 3.5 x 2 inches
Fabric, wood
2023
The rainbow gay flag, often referred to as the LGBTQ+ pride flag, has a rich history dating back to 1978. Designed by artist and activist Gilbert Baker, it was created to symbolize unity, diversity, and the fight for equal rights. Each of the flag's original eight colors carried a specific meaning such as turquoise for art.
Over time, the flag's design was simplified to the familiar six-stripe version we know today consisting of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. It has become a powerful and universally recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality.
